Franchise Business opportunities,Franchise News India,Food trucks,The mention of this expression might remind many of those tattooed American dudes that appear on lifestyle shows; cooking and serving food out of a truck, which is usually parked in a rather open space.
While the culture of these large catering vehicles in India might not be as big a phenomena as in the United States, their recent growth in our own country has been surprisingly noteworthy; Bengaluru being a leading exponent of this trend. Many might argue about the lack of need when it comes to food trucks, given the plethora of food hawkers spilled across our crowded streets. But some young food entrepreneurs from the city beg to differ as this catering culture has picked up substantially in Nagpur too. The trucks might not be the actual size here, but the wheels are slowly turning.
Inexpensive alternative While some young restaurateurs are fortunate enough to boast of a sound financial backing, the others fall short on this front. For such students and budding food business aspirants, the concept of food trucks is a welcome first step into this industry. “A group of three, we first planned to start a restaurant. But after doing a market research, it soon dawned on us that the initial investment far exceeds our expectations. And that is when we considered the option of going ahead with a food truck. The idea is still to get a franchise registered for ourselves and this is a cost-effective method up that ladder,” said Shashank Lokhande, one of the owners of a mini food truck and also a student who is considering this as a serious career option.
E-route to publicity Banking on the power of the virtual world, food truck owners are taking it to popular social networking sites to promote their mobile eateries. “It helps us reach a larger audience as a majority of our generation is glued to the world of social media. Though some of our customers have come through offline promotions too, but a larger section of the young crowd have been informed about us through our social networking page which has hit more than 300 likes within a few weeks,” said Navdeep Multani, another food truck owner. Emphasising this growing need of online marketing, another such entrepreneur, Robert Francis, added, “Although I’m not very well versed with social media, my wife and I are still planning to go ahead with online publicity for our venture.”
Health and hygiene Unlike the ambiguity at the street food stalls, these food trucks maintain a certain level of hygiene. One of the recently opened ones has gone a step further to specialise in healthy breakfast options. “A local survey, some weeks back, strongly suggested that there is a dearth of such breakfast options. So we thought of making it our USP and introduced a variety of egg preparations for fitness freaks. For the vegetarians, we have a unique preparation of a moong daal cheela cooked with oats to make it a healthy one,” informed Nahush Badge, one of the owners of a stall cum truck which specialises in egg preparations.
City savouring variety One of the most attractive features of these mobile food stores is the assortment of cuisine that they are serving. From continental to Chinese, varied menus and cost effective prices available at these vehicles are leaving city foodies spoilt for choices. “My favourite joint to relish an American Chop Suey is not a proper restaurant but a food truck. At ` 80, you would get literally nothing at even a mid-range eatery in town.
