Copenhagen-based importer and spice specialist Julian Amery was recently in the news after he inked a franchise business agreement with the Future group for its gourmet chain Foodhall, whose fifth outlet was officially launched in Gurgaon on Wednesday.
Amery’s association with the Future group is the result of a “chance encounter” with its Chief Executive Officer Kishore Biyani and his family while they were holidaying in Denmark. The family had gone to Amery’s Indian spice stall in a local market where Amery offered Mrs Biyani some freshly-brewed tea. During the short conversation, Kishore Biyani told him he was a shopkeeper in India and exchanged contact details. To Amery’s surprise, a few weeks later he got an email from Avni Biyani, Kishore Biyani‘s younger daughter, saying the group was interested in doing business with him.
Amery’s spice stall is one example of what Foodhall has on offer. A cereal bar, olive oil bar, exotic vegetable, bakery items, gift corner are among the 8,000-9,000 units being sold at the store.
Spread over 15,000-sq ft, the latest store houses food brands from around the world, with a running kitchen that serves over 20 kinds of freshly-baked breads, wide varieties of fresh cheese, wines and olive oil. One can find local tomatoes, potato and onion in the range of Rs 24 and above a kg, to exotic imported tomatoes costing Rs 2,400, potato at Rs 1,700 and avacado at Rs 1,800 a kg.
