Miami-based Pollo Tropical enters India

Miami-based restaurant chain Pollo Tropical on Wednesday announced its foray into India and plans to open 10 outlets in the northern part of the country in the next four years.

The company which has partnered with city-based Paramount Group opened its first outlet here in the Capital. It is looking for franchise partners for West, South and East India.

“India is a huge and growing market with high middle class population. It is an important market. This is an ideal market for our brand to grow even though it is far away from US,” Pollo Tropical Senior Vice-President International Development Marc Mushkin told PTI. He said the outlet here is the first restaurant of the company outside Americas.

Globally, Pollo Tropical has presence only in North and South America with 95 in the US alone and 33 in central and south America through franchises.

Paramount Group, Pollo Tropical’s franchise partner for North Indian region, will open 10 Caribbean themed restaurants within next four years in Delhi NCR, Ludhiana and Chandigarh.

These restaurants will require an investment of about Rs 15-20 crore, Paramount Group CEO and Executive Director Manjit Singh Saini said, adding, it has set a sales target of Rs 1 lakh per day from its first store located in South Delhi.

“We are confident of achieving this daily sales target. We are getting good response to our Caribbean styled restaurant,” Saini said.

As part of the franchise agreement, Paramount group will pay five per cent of sales as royalty to Pollo Tropical.

On Pollo Tropical’s Indian expansion plans, Mushkin said “By next two-three years we will finish identifying 4-5 partners for each region for our restaurant chain. We would be looking at franchise partners only.”
