PATNA: With an aim to providing quality and reliable power supply by 2015, energy minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav on Tuesday distributed franchise papers to Bhagalpur Electricity Distribution Company Private Limited to manage the power supply in Bhagalpur and its adjoining areas of Aliganj and Kahalgaon from January 1.
Muzaffarpur was the first town which franchise was handed over to a private company and from February 1, India Power Corporation, Bodh Gaya, will look after the power supply in Gaya town.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said over 1.20 lakh power consumers of Gaya, Bodh Gaya and Manpur will get power supply through the new company from February 1. The franchise business has been given for a period of 15 years and if the experiment in Gaya, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarour succeeds, it may be extended to other cities also, he said.
The minister, while defending the action to give power distribution to franchise in three cities, said the distribution of franchise in india Muzaffarpur has resulted in improved power supply, better infrastructure, less loss and less establishment cost too.
Yadav further said Gujarat and Sikkim are the only states which earn profit in power supply. “The new franchise system will help reduce transmission and distribution losses along with improved power supply and more collection of revenues,” he said.
The minister admitted government is not able to supply power in the semiurban and rural areas of the state. “Only 46% of the population is getting power and Rajiv Gandhi rural electrification scheme too could not reach the villages. Patna is getting 450 megawatt power,” he said.
Bihar State Power Holding Company Ltd CMD Sandip Paundrik also defended the decision to handover power distribution to private companies in three cities and denied the charge that the government is purchasing power at higher rates and handing over to new private companies at lower rates.
